We have been keeping busy the past two weekends with camping and road racing. The weekend of May 19th was the Aspen Cycling Festival. The weekend starts off with a hill climb up Independence Pass Road while it’s still closed for the season and ends with a 10 turn criterium around the streets of Aspen. We decided to skip the hill climb and instead do a family ride from Aspen to the Woody Creek Tavern. We started off around 10am and it was cold with snow and rain all around us. This is where our son’s determination came in. He was excited to road bike and we were going no matter what. It turned out to be a great ride and I learned how hard it was to pull the Chariot on my road bike!
The next morning I had a 9am start time for my race. Luckily the weather had warmed up and the sun was shining. I lined up with 7 other women. It was a super fun and fast course with no braking required. I stayed in the front three the entire race. With 1/2 lap to go I broke away and won. Randy also had a solid race. The real fun happened in the kid’s race. Kalden has very excited to do his first road bike race. For some reason they lined all ages and abilities up at the same time. It was a bit chaotic but all the kids had fun and Kalden was psyched to cross the line first.
If you are headed to Aspen this summer here are just a few things to check out:
– Road ride up Maroon Bells
– Family bike ride from Aspen to Woody Creek or any other part of the Rio Grande Trail. If you are on road bike I suggest taking McClain Flats road out of Aspen to bypass the dirt section of the path.
– Lunch at Woody Creek Tavern
