Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher. – Oprah Winfrey
When I started to bike I learned early on that you want to ride with people better than you as much as possible. The formula for success on the bike is to follow and surround yourself with people that are where you want to be.
And that also goes for life.
Friday was my last day at the company (IBM) I have worked for the last 13 years. I finally got caught in one of the yearly layoffs. Great timing – right? I’m ok. With 13 years comes a healthy severance package so I have some time to re-evaluate what’s important and how to move forward.
So when I had to get to Boulder to sign some severance papers I decided to go out in style. A friend of ours has a nice little jet and he offered to fly me there. Why not? 45 minutes flight or a 6 hour drive…easy decision. But more than the fancy plane and time savings it was great to be surrounded by someone that’s successful, adventurous, and full of compassion. I would like to think we would all be like that if we had the means but sadly, as you know, not everyone is so generous with their time or possessions.
I feel truly blessed that I have a lot of those successful and generous people in my life. People from all walks of life that love their lives so much they have room to give and share. I love being surrounded by people both in person and on social media that are living authentically and want that for others. I love that I can look at friends in the exact same situation as me and see they aren’t jumping right back into the corporate life. They are actually turning down jobs and contracts for big money because ‘it’s not right’ and they can find better. Friends that are going to medical school at 40, friends that have PhDs but choose to live in the mountains and do what they love.
Time is valuable. Life is short. There is enough for everyone. I’m focused on ‘riding’ with those people that lift me up, teach me, and let me grow.
