Many Septembers ago we literally traded the school Many Septembers ago we literally traded the school bus for the bike bus. 72 seasons felt better than 18 summers-and Fall, Winter and Spring are the best times to bike, travel, and learn about the world. That one step to do something completely unconventional has turned into a life that feels 100% normal to us now.
September road trip. Alvord Desert-Steamboat-Breckenridge-Crested Butte-Ridgway-Moab-Richfield-Park City.

Lars has been asking to go to the Alvord Desert for a few years. Finally made it happen. We camped by a hot spring, Lars drove on the Playa, we ate local beef, watch the lunar eclipse, and had the famous Fields Milkshakes.

It’s been almost 10 years since we’d been to Steamboat. Didn’t have high expectations for the trails but they really surprised us. Enjoyed the bike park, town trails and hot springs.

Breckenridge over Labor Day. Stayed at the overpriced Tiger Run RV Resort because you can’t beat the location for trail access. Enjoyed the Colorado Trail, early leaf peeping, and climbing Mt. Guyot with mountain goats.

Crested Butte still might be my favorite bike town. Glad to see it hasn’t changed much. Introduced Lars to 401, Teocalli, Doctor Park, Strand Hill and a great little bike park. Made time to stop and support some great local business like Secret Stash, Camp 4 Coffee, Big Al’s, Chopwood Merc, Montanyas.

Ouray/Ridgway - Quick stop (mostly because we kept getting flash flood warnings) at our old stomping grounds. Rode the RAT, caught time with friends, drove over to Telluride the hard way. The San Juans always have a place in our 💕.

Moab at the end of September is a sleeper as no mountain bikers have shown up yet. Lucked out with beautiful weather. Took Lars down The Whole Enchilada, Captain Ahab, Navajo Rocks, Dead Horse. Visited 2 National Parks via the backdoors (highly recommend Shafer road and Willow Springs) if you have the right vehicle are up for a little adventure. Visited Milt’s so many time we got the locals discount. Randy also attended the Bronco Rodeo and learned about tilting ours to 26°.

Richfield, Utah is great example of build it and they will come. Got shuttled up a dirt road for an hour and took the Spi
Save this for your next MTB Trip to Steamboat. W Save this for your next MTB Trip to Steamboat.

We haven’t been to Steamboat in almost ten years. We were happily surprised with the quantity and quality of the trails. Also, the dirt is really good after the rain.

🚲 Spring Creek to Spring Roll - Classic 10 mile loop near town.

🚲 Flash of Gold - Gentle climbing through the aspens connect to BTR or Grouse back to car.

🚲 Highway to Hell on Emerald mountain is a masterpiece of trail building. Don’t miss this one.

🚲 Steamboat Bike Park - Small but quality trails. Favorites were Raw Hide (Tech), Flying Diamond (Jump), Rustlers (Flow), and Creekside.

🛁: Strawberry Hot Springs

⚡️ - Allowed at the bike park, also popular at Emerald mountain.

My kids have grown up with a lifetime of stories, My kids have grown up with a lifetime of stories, about trails ridden, places explored, races, road trips, and adventures together.

For us, mountain biking has never been about chasing the next skill or turning every ride into a training day. It’s about getting outside, going somewhere new, laughing, being together, and making the kind of memories that turn into stories later.

The skills come with time. The fun (including type 2 fun) is the part I never want them to lose.

Yep, it’s Washington. Some areas like Galbraith in Yep, it’s Washington. Some areas like Galbraith in Bellingham might be on your radar (and it matches the hype). Check out our blog post on Galbraith to help you navigate the best trails.

In addition, the state is covered with world-class trails.

Seattle Area: Tiger Mountain, Raging River, Duthie Skills Park have destination worthy riding.

Olympia: North Slope (some of our favorite trails) plus they have camping there.

North Cascades: Darrington. The North Mountain trails are epic. Can’t think of a better way to describe. Bring your climbing legs, e-bike or shuttle.

Central Washington: Leavenworth trails are also worth a day or two. They’re on the drier side so early summer is a good time to visit.

Eastern Washington: Spokane can keep you busy for days. I really enjoyed the routes of the top of Mt. Spokane.

Bonus. You can also find an ice cream cone the size of your head at Snowgoose Produce.

A good way to see these trails is to do a @racecascadia enduro @heather_ontheshot is always there taking amazing photos. Also check out and support the orgs that build and maintain the trails @evergreenmtb @wmbcmtb

Racing has a way of stripping it down to one line, Racing has a way of stripping it down to one line, one decision, one moment of commitment. Always fun at @racecascadia enduros.

Heather also told me she was going to be there 📸 so of course I needed to send it. Let’s not discuss how I did this entire trail with my shock locked out.

The road is always calling even though home is rat The road is always calling even though home is rather comfy.

It’s hard to let go of a life on the road. The excitement of new trails, adventure, chasing the sun…never gets old.

Where are you headed this summer?

First Whistler trip of the season in the books. Ka First Whistler trip of the season in the books. Kalden was back to his huge ascents at Blackcomb then all day in the park 7 weeks after a dislocated hip. Oh to heal like a 20 yr old! Lars is now ticking off the double blacks with guidance. Both were able to fit in a Phat race. Randy and I holding steady although I did a new double black feature which I wouldn’t do last year. E-bikes and tow straps make the Valley trails a little more approachable which is nice to get away from weekend crowds. I also still do love me a good old xc loop at Lost Lake.

Got our fix of Whistler bears and good dirt. Also great to ride with friends on most days which makes it all the more fun.

Mid-June might just be my favorite time in the bike park.
We’re back! Can’t let our season passes sit around We’re back! Can’t let our season passes sit around and collect dust.

Still thinking about our time in NZ where life see Still thinking about our time in NZ where life seemed to calm down and be vivid all at the same time. There’s something about traveling and riding bikes that brings some clarity. The joy is real in the moment, but so are the memories you carry when life feels a little heavier.

A few things I try to keep in mind:

Appreciate happiness while it’s there.

There’s nothing in the past you can change.

Wherever you are, try to find something beautiful.

Always be aware of what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.

Don’t worry about things that probably won’t happen (not that bad things don’t happen, they just usually don’t happen when you’re worrying). I DO NOT have this one dialed at all.

Thinking about the gap between where you are and where you want to be widens it. Action narrows it.

Ride/travel etc…w/o thinking about the end. Don’t wish for it to end or be longer.

You don’t need the world to understand you.

If the sun is shining and you can be outside be outside.

The key thing about life is change.
