Rotorua Clips and CLIF Notes. The forest in Rotoru Rotorua Clips and CLIF Notes.
The forest in Rotorua is like no other place. It’s a magical playground with so many trails you could never ride them all even over weeks. There’s also hot springs everywhere which makes a great combo. You’ll want a plan and probably at least one private shuttle or a local. If not, the public shuttle drivers are the nicest people and will answer your questions. The town? Well honestly it’s not our favorite, maybe our least favorite in NZ. It’s a little rough around the edges so keep that in mind. 1 or 2 weeks is a perfect timeframe.

The Old Ghost Road always tops lists and it just m The Old Ghost Road always tops lists and it just might be the best mountain bike experience in the world. 85km of singletrack, no road crossings, huge climbs through a rainforest, ridgeline views, a cliff side hut, and long, wild descents back down.

As incredible as the trail was, riding it as a family was the real winner. Most trails go by in a blur but with OGR you have a few days to take it all in together. So much space, so much beauty, times of quiet (no devices) and lots of laughs. Getting to share an adventure like that together is something we’ll remember forever.

And…the perfect finish. A warm outdoor shower and pizza at the Rough & Tumble Lodge because mountain bike adventures should end with some luxury and indulgence.

We all lined up for the 2026 NZ Enduro National Ch We all lined up for the 2026 NZ Enduro National Champs in Rotorua this weekend. Kalden did the elite long course and we did the shorter course (they even had shuttles for us so we had time to relax in the hot tubs after).

Kiwis are serious about their racing but they also have a lot of fun. My favorite part is they keep the winners secret until the podium so you have to show up to see how you did. They are also very generous with the prizes. Kalden scored $250 at the local bike shop and we got some other swag.

Definitely better than a board game.

Our winter in Nelson (aka summer here) was a blast Our winter in Nelson (aka summer here) was a blast. Pedaling to local trails, multi-day bike trips, beach days, swimming holes…every day felt pretty special.

I don’t take for granted the life we’ve built to make experiences like this possible. It’s not always easy, and no matter how much we plan, trips like this always come with surprises. But that’s part of it and a chance to adapt, work through things, and keep going. A visa issue that prevented us from boarding, broken bikes and parts that required international shipping, too much luggage to move from place to place, time zones issues…the list goes on. These little things happen but they also build resilience for when the bigger things hit.

Grateful for it every single day.
As a mountain biker I didn’t want to admit this. As a mountain biker I didn’t want to admit this.

But Abel Tasman National Park got us off our bikes.

Turquoise water. Swimming holes with water slides. Sandbars. Rainforests.

Still team bike though.

Nelson has quickly become our favorite mountain bi Nelson has quickly become our favorite mountain bike town in New Zealand.

While it’s known for steep and tech, trails like Firball are pure flow. Fun for strong riders and repeatable for families with public shuttle days.
